PPDA signals authorization deficiencies in preliminary voter registration

The Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPDA) calls on the Central Election Commission to immediately take concrete steps to remedy the situation concerning the preliminary registration of the Moldovans who will be outside the country on October 30. The call was made after members of the party reported that dozens of expats announced that they face big difficulties in the preliminary registration process, IPN reports.

The party calls upon the CEC to extend the deadline for the preliminary registration of Moldovan voters who are aboard, to increase the number of polling places that will be established abroad depending on the results and to also set up an accessible counter that will show online how many voters registered, without these accessing another division, such as “Statistics”.

According to the PPDA, the expats complained about authorization deficiencies. These said they have to access the webpage for dozens of times to register. The RSA verification system does not enable to verify several persons from one computer and this happens at a time when not all the expats have free and unlimited access to personal computers, connected to the Internet.

The CEC also issued a press release, saying that 3,570 Moldovans eligible to vote who are abroad have registered beforehand online in order to take part in the presidential elections.

The Commission says the people who register beforehand will be automatically removed from the basic voter rolls at the place of domicile in Moldova, for the period of this year’s presidential elections only. Under the electoral legislation, the information about the number of citizens registered abroad beforehand is to be transmitted to the Government for taking a decision concerning the additional polling places that will be set up outside embassies and consular office. When establishing these polling places, the number of voters who took part in the previous elections will also be taken into account.

The CEC warns that the Moldovans eligible to vote who will be abroad on the election day can register beforehand 40 days before the elections given that, in accordance with the Election Code, the polling places are established at least 35 days before the election day. The last registration day was September 19.
