All the household appliances will be accompanied by power content labels and labels with information about energy consumption either they are sold in shops, online or are leased out, IPN reports, quoting the Law on the Labeling of Products with Energy Impact.

Deputy Minister of Economy Tudor Copaci said the goal of the law is to promote energy efficient domestic appliances that reduce energy consumption.

Under the law, any advertisement for a certain model of products with energy impact must include information about the energy impact, the energy efficiency class and the product’s price. The law does not apply to secondhand products, passenger and freight vehicles, etc.

The Agency Efficiency Energy will organize the informing of companies and the population about the advantages of energy labeling, while the Consumer Protection Agency will monitor how the energy labels are used and will demand withdrawing the product from sale if the required conditions are not met.

Foreign studies show the refrigerator and freezer account for 47% of the electric power consumed by a household. Lighting consumes 21% of the electricity, the washing machine - 10%, the music boxes - 7%, while the TV set - 5%.

Energy consumption in Moldovan households in 2001 – 2008 rose by 48% owing to the use of a larger number of home appliances. A household consumes almost 1,400 kWh of power a year, as in Romania and the Baltic states.

The law was published recently in the Official Gazette and will tale effect in October or November, when the regulations concerning the information that the labels on electrical appliances must contain are adopted.
