The mass media in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia and in the Transnistrian region made certain progress in covering subjects about socially unprivileged groups and minorities, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This is one of the conclusions of the second monitoring report compiled by the Independent Journalism Center, IPN reports.
Progress was also made as regards the quality and profoundness of the subjects concerning persons with disabilities. Compared with the previous period monitored, the number of discriminatory formulations in the relevant subjects decreased.
The report also identified deficiencies in covering issues regarding the mentioned groups. The subjects broadcast in the monitored period represented mainly information that was made public at events or that was provided in communiques by institutions. The original subjects about human stories and complex analyses based on several sources were in minority.
The authors of the report recommend the media outlets to review their editorial policies so that the subjects about minorities and socially deprived people are documented thoroughly and appear more often.
The journalists are encouraged to disseminate subjects concerning the social, economic and cultural inclusion of representatives of minorities and underprivileged groups, the freedoms and responsibilities of these categories and their opinions about issues of common interest.
