Portugal could open embassy in Chisinau
Portugal might open an embassy in Chisinau after it overcomes the economic and financial crisis. The announcement was made by Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu in a news conference held after his visit to Lisbon during February 21-23, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Mihai Ghimpu said he discussed the subject at a meeting with the Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, at the insistence of the Moldovans who live in Portugal on a temporary basis. Now the Moldovans have to go to Bucharest to get visas and solve other consular matters.
Ghimpu also said that the Moldovans in Portugal informed him that when they return to Moldova with cars with European license numbers, the customs officers levy additional taxes from them. “They have to pay a lot of money to be allowed to enter the country with the car. We must raise this issue in the Parliament as we have hundreds of thousands of Moldovans abroad,” the caretaker president said.
In another connection, Mihai Ghimpu stressed that Portugal supports the initiative to hold a national referendum on the modification of the Constitution and recommends that Moldova establish good relations with Romania and Ukraine as well as the EU member states and Russia. The Moldovan authorities hope Portugal will take part in the donors' meetings that will take place in Brussels on March 24 and will back Moldova.
