Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko thinks any escalation at the Ukrainian border along the Transnistrian region is highly unlikely. He made this statement during a visit to Odessa on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day, the Ukrainian press reported.
Petro Poroshenko said he was positive there is no threat coming from the Transnistrian region as Russia doesn't share a border with the breakaway province. However, the Ukrainian president noted that the self-proclaimed republic had a quite strong military force concentrated at the Moldova-Ukraine border.
As reported earlier by the Ukrainian media, there were concerns that the Transnistrian region posed a security threat for the country and hence a modification of the conflict settlement mechanism was needed. The de facto authorities in Tiraspol responded by saying that such reports aimed at straining the situation.
