73 percent of Moldova's population think they lack decent living conditions, according to the Public Policy Institute's (IPP) Opinion Barometer for October, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the case of 27 percent of the respondents, household incomes don't cover the basic needs, while 46 percent of the polled population said their earnings are enough just to make ends meet. At the same time, 19.3 percent of the polled population say they earn enough to make a decent living, but not also to buy expensive things, while 7 percent confess they manage to buy some valuable goods, but they have to tighten their belts in other domains. Only 0.3 percent of the respondents admit they have everything they need and know no financial limitations. The survey indicates that the poverty threshold remains constant over the past 6 or years. The worst affected are the elderly (88 percent) and the persons with low social and financial status (90 percent). Prices remain the greatest concern of much of the population, rising from 67 percent in April 2008 to 72 percent in the updated Barometer. Poverty is the second main concern of the Moldovans, with 54 percent. About a half (49 percent) of the Moldovans are concerned about the future of their children. Unemployment worries 34 percent of the respondents. 39 percent of the population is dissatisfied with their lives, a 10 percent decrease from the previous Barometer, with the main distresses being money shortage (83 percent), health care (73 percent), the messiness of the settlements they live in (72 percent) and the political turmoil in the country (65%). More than a half of the respondents (53 percent) think that life hasn't changed much from one year ago, while one in five respondents says it worsened. The Public Opinion Barometer was conducted in the period from September 26 to October 20 on a sample of 1,100 persons from 76 locations across Moldova, excepting the Transnistrian region, with a margin of error of ±3 percent.
