48% of the respondents of a poll said they would vote for joining the Customs Union if a referendum on the issue was held. Some 41% said they are for entering the European Union. 6% of those polled said they are against joining either of these, while 5% haven’t yet decided. The results of the poll conducted by the sociological company Public Opinion Fund were presented in a news conference at IPN on March 24. The poll was commissioned by the newspaper “Timpul”.
The survey shows that 53% of the respondents consider that Moldova should be now closer to Russia, while 47% - to the West and Europe. The sociological company’s chairman Andrei Luchian said the number of respondents who are for coming closer to Russia has slightly decreased due to the economic situation in this country. 42% of those surveyed said the rapprochement with Russia hampers Moldova from integrating into the EU.
Asked about their preferences for countries and regions, 60% of those polled said they have a positive attitude to Russia, 49% to the EU, 36% to Romania, 32% to the U.S., while 27% to Ukraine.
According to Andrei Luchian, the respondents were asked about Moldova’s possible union with Romania to see their attitude to the unionists. “63% of those questioned would vote against, 23% would vote for, 7% haven’t yet decided, while 6% would not take part in a possible plebiscite. “The massive actions to introduce the idea of the union with the neighboring country in the media sphere produce results,” stated Andrei Luchian.
The poll was carried out on a sample of 1,792 people from 107 villages and towns of Moldova between March 11 and 20. The margin of sampling error is 2.3%.
