Poll places Veaceslav Iordan and Dumitru Braghis in the lead of Chisinau Mayor’s race

Over 29 percent of Chisinau residents would vote for Veaceslav Iordan and 24 percent would vote for Dumitru Braghis for Mayor General of Chisinau municipality, according to the results of a sociologic poll conducted by Socio-Inform Centre and made public on Friday, May 25, at a press conference. The survey places Dorin Chirtoaca third, with 14%, Leonid Bujor -12.3%, Vladimir Filat – over 5%, Alexandru Corduneanu and Ion Mereuta – nearly 4% each. The rest of the candidates accumulated a total of 7%. According to Ion Batcu, director general of the Centre, the percentage of respondents who said they will take part in election is roughly 80%, and a rate of 33% said they haven’t decided whom to vote for. Batcu mentioned that the survey was conducted in the period from May 11 to May 21, by phone and face-to-face on-the-street interviews, on a sample of 1435 persons, with a margin of error of 3%. When asked to comment on the results of the survey, political analyst Igor Botan said that it has to be taken into account the large number of undecided respondents. There is still a week left for the campaign and the results could change, he said. Botan also mentioned that Moldovan citizens are not always sincere when it comes to expressing a political choice in a poll. The results of the Barometer of Bublic Opinion, published at the beginning of this week, showed that Veaceslav Iordan would be voted by 34.2% of respondents, followed by Dorin Chirtoaca – 24%, Vladimir Filat – 9%, Dumitru Braghis – 8.4%, Alexandru Corduneanu – 6.7%, Leonid Bujor and Eduard Musuc – 5%. The rest of the candidates collected less than de 3%. 61% of respondents were undecided. According to the polling organisation, because of the small number of persons interviewed – 254 – the margin of error was 8%. The respective survey was conducted in the period from May 3 to May 4. The Socio-Inform Centre published in November 2006 the results of a poll on the Governor’s race in Gagauzia. According to them, Mihail Formuzal would have been voted by 40.4% of the population in the region, followed by Gheorghi Tabunscic – 15.3% of respondents, Nicolai Dudoglo - circa 13%. However, the results of the first round of elections showed that Formuzal collected 34% of the valid votes, Dudoglo -31.4%, and Tabunscic - nearly 24%.
