Politics should be separated from justice in the issue of the Chisinau mayoral election invalidation, deputy chairman of the Democratic Party Vladimir Cebotari stated in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel. According to him, if an independent judiciary is wanted, the political component should be left aside, IPN reports.
Vladimir Cebotari noted that politics should be separated from justice in this case. “We said we want to build an independent justice system and we should thus leave politics aside. Suspicions come from the political class and it is probably a Moldovan tradition to say that this is bad when you don’t like something,” he stated.
According to the politician, in this case the law was violated and such a violation is penalized and the court of law was to identify the violation and decide the punishment. The Democratic Party is ready to initiate the examination of the electoral legislation if the article based on which the invalidation of the local mayoral elections was decided can create problems in the upcoming elections.
Jurist Pavel Midrigan said the validation of the election in the other elections by the court was rather a formality. The court of law didn’t examine the matter very scrupulously. Now the court ascertained that both of the candidates broke the law even if no application was filed against Socialist candidate Ion Ceban. “This is something new. We didn’t witness something like this in the previous elections. Neither the Constitutional Court paid great attention to details in the parliamentary elections. The validation of elections was a formality. In the other elections, the court decision was also a formality,” he stated, noting it was up to the court to analyze the evidence and take a decision as to the violations committed by the candidates and the decision was taken within the limits of the law.
