The MPs and experts have dissenting opinions about the Liberal-Reformist lawmakers’ initiative to institute tough penalties for separatism promotion, IPN reports, quoting the program “Fabrica” of Publika TV channel.

In the program, the president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov said such a law is needed in order to strengthen statehood, but its implementation now is risky because it can cause controversy in society. “I think such a bill should be discussed with society first. We now have the obligation to calm things down and to look for peaceful solutions,” he stated.

Political analyst Corneliu Ciurea considers that this bill is more political than juridical in character and in may cause dissension in society. “The bill contains many risks and can stir things up given that we are in a seismic political zone,” he stated.

Political analyst Anatol Taranu said harsh anti-separatism measures are now very necessary and such a law should have been adopted when Moldova declared its independence. He personally agrees that the separatists should be deprived of nationality, but such a penalty cannot be imposed in a democratic society.

The program’s permanent invitee, journalist Cristian Tabara said he is for an anti-separatism law, but recommended that the text should be edited with great care and this law should be implemented as cautiously as possible.

One of the bill authors, Liberal-Reformist Ana Gutu said the bill was drafted taking into account the geopolitical situation in the region. “Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan have such a law. Why cannot Moldova have one too?” she asked.
