Dirk Schuebel, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, thinks that the situation in our country will not degenerate dramatically in the following period. “I believe that the reasonable politicians of this country will prevail and the crisis can be solved by democratic means”, said the EU official at a press conference when asked to comment on the statements made on Friday by Communist leader Vladimir Voronin. The leader of the parliamentary opposition demanded, “as a last warning”, that the governing Alliance for European Integration dissolved Parliament and called early parliamentary election. He also said he possessed information that the government was preparing to use “armored vehicles and automatic weapons” against potential demonstrators, “defenders of democracy”. “I would not like to see the situation as dramatic as Mr. Voronin described it and I think this crisis can be solved through new elections”, stated Dirk Schuebel. The head of the EU Delegation considers that the current political situation in Moldova is quite normal for an unofficial pre-election period, when politicians try to attract voters to their side through various methods. “In every pre-election phase, the situation gets more tense between parties than after elections. So I think it is quite normal that each of the parties and politicians tries to attract the attention of the potential voters. This is normal as long as it remains within democratic standards. “You've asked me I there is a crisis, I think there is a crisis until a president is elected. It is crucial to find the best way the elect the president of the Republic of Moldova, most likely in this case jointly with parliamentary elections. “I will consider this crisis to be solved when the president has been properly elected, when a new parliament has been freely and fairly elected, so that this country can go on with a lot of work that it is in front of the political leaders”, said Dirk Schuebel.
