Political party barred to compete in elections in one place and allowed in another one

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has excluded the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Friday, May 25, from the list of candidates for the Stefan Voda Council, and included the party in the list for Briceni Council. SDP was excluded from the Stefan Voda list for the reason that one and the same person appeared on the party’s list under two different names. After excluding the respective person from the list, the party was left with only 16 candidates, which contravenes the provisions of the Electoral Code. The case will be handled by the General Prosecutor’s Office. Also yesterday, CEC ordered the re-registration of SDP as an electoral competitor in the local elections for the Briceni Council, after the local electoral council had excluded the party because of the withdrawal of certain candidates. But CEC considered the decision of the local authority as ungrounded. CEC also warned several TV channels and electoral candidates over cases of broadcasting unauthorised advertising spots, including those showing governmental and local administration institutions. Local general elections will take place on 3 June 2007.
