Political crisis will deepen if head of state is elected by people, Vladimir Voronin

The Communists Party (PCRM) cannot accept the constitutional amendment proposal submitted by the Alliance for European Integration – to allow the people to elect the head of state themselves - as this will make the election procedure more complicated and will deepen the political crisis. The leader of the party Vladimir Voronin explained the PCRM's position to a delegation of the Venice Commission that is headed by the organization's deputy secretary Thomas Markert, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the PCRM. “These 'games', interpretations and arguments are employed by the present administration with the aim of extending its term in office,” Vladimir Voronin told the delegation. 'The PCRM is ready to vote in favor of modifying article 78 of the Constitution in this or the next Parliament,” the Communist leader said, stressing that a compromise with the Alliance should be reached by June 16, 2010, but the leaders of the government coalition do not hurry up. Vladimir Voronin said he does not agree with some of the amendments to the Electoral Code adopted in first reading. “The Alliance's proposals are aimed at ensuring legal protection for rigging the elections. I mean the proposal to allow the Moldovans who are abroad to vote during two days, the decision to decrease the voter turnout for referendums, etc.,” the Communist leader said.
