Political class 'not interested' in revealing April 7 truth

As long as justice and law enforcement institutions remain politicized, the truth about April 7 won’t be revealed. The political class is interested in keeping it a secret. The statements were made for Info-Prim Neo by analysts Ion Tabarta and Andrei Iovu. Andrei Iovu, expert at the Institute of Public Policies (IPP), said that a part of information about April 7 was offered to the public. “I mean the footage from public buildings, the report of the commission for the elucidation of causes and consequences of the events after April 5, 2009, and other investigations and analyses. Generally speaking, we can say we know what happened then. We can’t claim to not know anything, but some facts remain unknown: who organized the protests, who scattered the crowd, who were the provokers”, said Andrei Iovu. The analyst is of the opinion that such information will never be presented in a report, maybe only if an internal investigation is started. “There were many hopes regarding the report of the investigation commission, but it only rose new questions: how started the fire in the Parliament, why were law enforcement bodies inactive even if their numbers were superior, questions about the tortures in police stations”, claims the analyst. The IPP expert claims that Moldova has a system problem and all the uncertainty surrounding April 7 illustrate the shortcomings and incapacity of decision makers to keep things under control in certain situations. “The fact that so many things remain unknown proves Moldova is unable to make sure that human rights are respected, as they weren’t respected on April 7, or in the events that followed. It also indicates that the political class is deeply divided and ruled by narrow party interests. What’s even worse is that justice and law enforcement bodies are dangerously politicized. It’ll be even worse when a political leader will be put in charge of the Prosecutor General’s Office”, stressed Andrei Iovu. Deputy head of the Center of Strategic Research and Political Consultancy “Politicon” Ion Tabarta thinks that it’s the political class who doesn’t want the truth about the events of 3 years ago to be known. “If not all politicians, at least some of them were surely involved. Everything is done to keep it a secret. This means that state institutions aren’t functioning properly. Either because of some interests or because of incapacity, these institutions are unable to find out the truth. Perhaps there is some political pressure on them. There were some cases when these institutions listened to orders from above, but we have no proof”, said Ion Tabarta. On April 7, 2009, thousands of young people gathered in the Great National Assembly Square to protest against the results of parliamentary elections, which they considered rigged as the Communists obtained the majority. After several hours of peaceful demonstrations, the crowd moved to the buildings of the Parliament and Presidency and devastated them. In the night between April 7 and 8, hundreds of young people were arrested and then tortured in police stations. Valeriu Boboc was found dead. The authorities failed to offer any answers about what happened, who provoked the crowd, who allowed the youth to be tortured or who killed Valeriu Boboc.
