Igor Dodon does not want PSRM to obtain majority of seats of MP in elections, opinion

President Igor Dodon, who announced he could run on the list of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) in the upcoming parliamentary elections, does not really want the party to obtain a majority of seats in the elections as he would have to form the government and to cope with the burden of governance, president of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives Andrei Popov was quoted by IPN as saying in the program “Politics of Natalia Morari” on TV8 channel.

According to Andrei Popov, Igor Dodon promised so many things that he would be unable to deliver them and the party in a year or two would draw back and the people would wonder why the PSRM does not fight oligarchy. “I think Igor Dodon rationally took the decision not to struggle for a majority now, to mimic the process and to be very, very active, but in reality he does not want this,” stated the expert.

He considers the Democratic Party also wants the PSRM to obtain at least 30-35 seats of MP in the next Parliament so as not to offer more space for other leaders and parties that are less tamed and more decided. At the same time, it wants the PSRM not to get more than 45 seats. “That’s why the Shor Party stepped up its efforts. I think there is also a explanation why the Party of Communists intends to run not only under the list, but also in single-member constituencies, “ said the president of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives.

Public policy expert Ștefan Gligor said currently the Election Code enables to annul the results of elections in at most one third of constituencies, which is in 17 constituencies. “It is allowed excluding persons, candidates who committed particular violations in these electoral constituencies and because of whom the elections were annulled by the Constitutional Court and the elections can be thus rerun,” he stated, adding in this case the composition of the Constitutional Court is very important as this also decides whether to validate or invalidate the elections.

The parliamentary elections were set for February 24, 2019.
