Representatives of the “People’s Will” Party said the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019 will be rigged and there are a number of preconditions in this regard, mainly the docile behavior of the police force, law enforcement agencies, prosecution service, courts of law and the Central Election Commission. The party calls on the political entities, nongovernmental organizations and the media to constitute an anti-electoral fraud alliance, forming thus a common Front that would monitor and would ensure the observance of the Constitution and the electoral legislation without which the election results will not be credible.
In a news conference at IPN, president of the “People’s Will” Party Ștefan Urîtu said the registers of voters are an instrument by which the elections could be rigged. The party went to court after the Central Election Commission restricted its access to the voter rolls used in the presidential elections of 2016. The ordinary court of law rejected their request, but the Appeals Court sent the case back for reexamination. The situated repeated and the Appeals Court after the third reexamination upheld the decision. “It seems that they ultimately found docile judges who executed what the government or the ruling party ordered,” stated Ștefan Urîtu.
He noted that the CEC does not make the registers of voters public on the pretext that there are personal data there. These are reprinted on the eve of the elections or on the election day and this is a serious violation and a method of fixing the election results. The voter rolls are most often used as a rigging instrument. The introduction of a constituency of voters that no one knows, even the local authorities, is a pertinent example. Moreover, there is a risk that those electors will vote not only in one constituency.
Vice president of the “People’s Will” Party Ion Levința said after the parliamentary elections it became evident how the MPs can be bought to change the configuration of Parliament. If the MPs had really defended people’s interests, they would have adopted a law to ban and penalize party switching. Instead of adopting such legal provisions, these resorted to the modification of the electoral system despite the recommendations of the Venice Commission as it is easier to “buy” an MP elected in a single-member constituency.
The party’s representatives called on the law enforcement agencies and the electoral bodies to do their job and to ensure the respect for the people’s will.
