President Dodon suspended for fifth time

President Igor Dodon was suspended from office for the fifth time. A decision to this effect was taken by the Constitutional Court on December 10 following a requisition filed by Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu and Democratic MP Sergiu Sârbu, IPN reports.

In the Constitutional Court’s meeting, Sergiu Sârbu said they requested the Court to ascertain the circumstances that justify the suspension of the President from office given the institutional impasse generated by the President’s deliberate refusal to fulfil his constitutional obligation to promulgate laws that were readopted by Parliament. The authors of the requisition make reference to five laws, among which is the Code of Audiovisual Media Services and the law by which the site of the former National Stadium is transferred to the U.S. Embassy for erecting a new had office there.

Presidential adviser Maxim Lebedinski said the presidential institution does not agree with the arguments provided by the requisition authors. The President didn’t want to promulgate the invoked laws due to the identified faults. “A President elected by the people cannot treat with indifference people’s difficulties or preferences. Consequently, the switchover to the direct election of the President entails the President’s involvement by concrete deeds,” noted the adviser.

Following the Constitutional Court’s decision, the Speaker of Parliament or the Premier will issue the decree to promulgate the five invoked laws.
