The Euro-Unionist Convention of the Republic of Moldova, which consists of members of Moldova’s first Parliament, historians, professors, political parties, political associations and movements, will run in the parliamentary elections of February 24 in the form of an electoral bloc of two political parties. The founders of the Convention, in a news conference at IPN on November 28, said it is a project to represent the Romanian national identity in the future Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
Valentin Dolganiuc, a member of Moldova’s first Parliament and of the European Civic Movement, said 14 entities are concerned about the suppression of the national Romanian identity, compromising of the European course, degradation of governance and the risk of having a non-representative Parliament after the elections of next February. The Euro-Unionist Convention’s actions will center on the participation in elections, entering of Parliament and constitution of a Euro-Unionist parliamentary group.
According to Valentin Dolganiuc, the Convention was created particularly for the unionist voters who didn’t have who to vote for in the previous elections. “We realize we will have to carry a cross by our actions. We realize the burden and responsibility. Time has come after 27 years to stand up and say firmly that we are Romanians, we are the Romanian nation that forms a majority here. We are responsible for our present and future on this territory,” he stated.
Anatol Țăranu, a member of Moldova’s first Parliament and of the European Civic Movement, said they haven’t yet compiled a list for the national constituency and haven’t identified the candidates for single-member constituencies, but will do it in the nearest future. The Euro-Unionist Convention will not be the opponent of the platform ACUM that consists of the PAS and PPPDA. They didn’t join ACUM because the parties that constituted this platform weren’t able to unite all the pro-European forces of Moldova, including the unionist segment. “The Euro-Unionist Convention appeared namely to fill this annoying gap that appeared in the electoral sphere of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Anatol Țăranu.
Historian Ion Negrei, who takes part in the same initiative, said the Republic of Moldova embraced a mistaken national development course. The Moldova national character is a mistaken development path. “The Republic of Moldova is a Romanian state and the population here, which forms a majority, belongs to the Romanian and European areas,” he noted.
The Euro-Unionist Convention of the Republic of Moldova is represented by the European Civic Movement, the Association of Unionist Pedagogues, the Association of Historians, the Institute of Social History “ProMemoria”, the Cultural League for the Union of Romanians Everywhere, the European Social-Politic Center, the National Association of People of Arts, the Foundation “Bessarabia’s Liberation Tower”, the Association “Saint of Jails, New Martyr Valeriu Gafencu”, the National Association of War Participants, the Committee for Safeguarding the Memorial Complex “Cemetery of Heroes”, the Paris Association for the Support of Bessarabia, the National Liberal Party and the Ecologist Green Party.
