The governor of the National Bank of Moldova Sergiu Cioclea described Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu’s statements that he is being prepared for another post or position, at home or abroad as a joke that was probably intended to be cajoling, IPN reports, quoting a statement of the central bank.
“By tendering my resignation, I stated my wish to resume my personal life and to continue an independent professional career in the public or political sphere of the Republic of Moldova,” Sergiu Cioclea stated.
In the November 23 sitting of Parliament, Speaker Andrian Candu said the governor of the National Bank of Moldova Sergiu Cioclea is a very good specialist and he is being prepared for another post “Given that Mister Cioclea is a very good specialist and he returned to the country to actually help the Republic of Moldova, I want to tell you that we are preparing him for another post or position, at home or abroad,” stated the Speaker, without providing details. When the draft decision concerning Cioclea’s resignation was being examined, Liberal MP Valerian Bejan asked why nothing was done to persuade Sergiu Cioclea to remain in office if he is such a professional.
On November 20, Sergiu Cioclea announced his resignation from the post of governor of the National Bank of Moldova as of November 30. He noted his decision was based on personal reasons. “For me, the post of governor hasn’t been actually a position. I set the goal of serving at the National Bank as long as it is needed to strengthen the banking system and to take the financial system out of the crisis,” Sergiu Cioclea stated in a press briefing.
