Traian Băsescu remains without Moldovan nationality

The Supreme Court of Justice on November 7 rejected the appeal filed by Andrei Bivol, the lawyer for former President of Romania Traian Băsescu, against the decree signed by the President of Moldova Igor Dodon, by which Traian Băsescu was deprived of Moldovan nationality. The judges upheld the Chisinau Appeals Court’s judgement passed in May. The Supreme Court of Justice’s decision was published on the court’s website in the evening of November 7, IPN reports.

The plaintiff, the President of Moldova Igor Dodon, asked to annul the decree signed by the previous President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti, by which Moldovan nationality was given to Traian Băsescu. Igor Dodon argued Traian Băsescu intentionally didn’t inform the Moldovan authorities about the fact that he was under investigation when his application for nationality was being examined.

Andrei Bivol said the ex-President of Romaine was given Moldovan nationality in an exceptional way, for special merits before the Republic of Moldova, and the law does not require to present relevant documents in such a case.

Earlier, Traian Băsescu, who is the president of honor of the National Unity Party of Moldova, said the withdrawal of Moldovan nationality by President Igor Dodon does not discourage him and does not make him abandon the idea of Moldova’s union with Romania, which is the only chance for ensuring the security and prosperity of the Moldovan citizens.
