Mihai Ghimpu: European integration is compromised by current government

The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said the parliamentary majority that consists of Democratic MPs does not really wants the European integration to be enshrined in the Constitution. After leaving the Parliament sitting, Mihai Ghimpu told the press that what the Democratic MPs do is nothing else but an electoral show staged before the elections in order to polish their image, IPN reports.

According to Mihai Ghimpu, not all the MPs of the PDM attended the October 18 sitting of Parliament and this shows the Democrats do not really want the European curse to be introduced in the Constitution. Speaker Andrian Candu violated the Parliament’s regulations when putting the bill to the vote in the first reading as the vote was to be held after approving the agenda of the meeting.

The Liberal leader noted the PDM pursued only one goal – to prepare for the election campaign. Owing to this party, Moldova has the worst relations with the EU ever following the ignoring of the Venice Commission’s recommendations, introduction of the mixed voting system, adoption of the fiscal reform and capital amnesty. “We cannot speak about European values where these are violated by the government itself,” he stated, adding being European means not having this thing enshrined in the Constitution, but ensuring decent living conditions for the people and the rule of law.

Mihai Ghimpu expressed his regret at the fact that they formed an alliance with the PDM for the sake of the European integration, but the leader of the PDM Vlad Plahotniuc annihilated this idea. The union with Romania is the only salvation. If Moldova unites with Romania, it will have European integration.

According to the politician, the idea of holding a referendum on the amendment of the Constitution is not welcome. A referendum is held when society feels free and does not live in fear. Also, a plebiscite cannot he held now as Russia’s influence on this territory is still very powerful.

The vote for the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration objective in it failed. The MPs of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Party of Socialists and the Party of Communists didn’t support the bill. The initiative garnered only 54 votes in favor and wasn’t thus adopted. A constitutional initiative is carried by the votes of 67 MPs. Before the vote, the Liberals said they would vote for this bill only together with the bill to amend Article 13 and replace the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language”.
