A team of Polish experts restore old stones on the graves of persons of Polish origin at the Catholic Cemetery in Chisinau. The works are performed within a project of the Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony of Poland, the Chisinau City Hall and the Embassy of Poland in Moldova, IPN reports.
The project is implemented the second year already. Three funeral stones have been restored so far. In the event to inaugurate the third restored stone on August 12, Michal Michalski, the head of the Division of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad, said the project only started. Within this cooperation, they aim to restore about 70 funeral stones, by 4-5 a year.
Michal Michalski is proud of the restoration school of his country. The Polish specialists work to restore or even rebuild the moments of the Polish heritage all over the world. Two Polish restorers now work in Chisinau. When the volume of work increases, the team of specialists will be extended.
Ludmila Botan, director of the municipal company “Complex of Funeral Services”, voiced hope that as many funeral stones as possible will be restored because they represent real masterpieces. The Polish specialists could also work on the restoration of the chapel of the Catholic Cemetery.
According to the local authorities, about 1,500 Polish persons were buried at the Catholic Cemetery.
