Polish President Lech Kaczynski commemorated in Chisinau

The Embassy of Poland in the Republic of Moldova, together with representatives of other embassies working in Chisinau and of the Moldovan authorities, commemorated the victims of the Smolensk plane crash in which the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife and another 94 persons died. The officials laid flowers at the commemorative plaque placed on Lech Kaczynski St in Chisinau and observed a moment’s silence in memory of the victims, IPN reports.

According to the Embassy of Poland, a service in memory of the victims of the crash was held at the Roman-Catholic Church in Chisinau in the morning of April 10.

Afterward, Ambassador Artur Michalski and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of Moldova Lilian Darii laid flowers at the commemorative plaque. The ceremony involved ambassadors working in Moldova, members of Parliament and other representatives of the Moldovan authorities and society, employees of the Embassy, representatives of the diplomatic corps and of the Polish diaspora in Moldova.

Afterward, an exhibition dedicated to President Kaczynski and his wife was mounted at the Polish Library “A. Mickiewicz” in Chisinau.

The plane crash happened on April 10, 2010. The officials were to take part in the ceremonies held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the massacre of the Polish officials in Khatyn, near Smolensk.
