Polish Cemetery maintenance works resume

Renovation and conservation works of several monuments to Polish persons burried at the Catholic (Polish) Cemetery in Chișinău have resumed on Monday, August 6. This year, work will continue on the Ohanovici family Chapel, and several tombstones will restored, IPN reports.

According to Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage representative Michal Michalski, in the past three years eight tombstones have been restored. This year, there are plans to restore the tombstone of a representative of the Polish community, a member of the Davidovici family.

As for the Ohanovici family Chapel, it was built on the grave of Iosif Katanovici Ohanovici more than a century ago, and is a unique monument for Moldova. The Chapel is already undergoing restoration; last year, a temporary roof was installed to stop the architectural monument from collapsing. Furthermore, tests and projections have been made for the step-by-step creation of a new aspect for the Chapel.

According to data from the municipal “Funeral Services” enterprise, the Catholic Cemetery has over three thousand graves, of which half are Polish.

The large-scale conservation works on the funerary monuments of the Catholic (Polish) Cemetery on Valea Trandafirilor Str are conducted under the Memorandum between the Polish Embassy in Moldova and the Chișinău City Hall, signed on October 27, 2014, for cooperation in the conservation of Polish cultural heritage.
