A patrol inspector who two years ago committed a road accident that resulted in the death of a 26-year-old passenger was sentenced to seven years in jail. He was driving under the influence of alcohol and, in order to avoid punishment, he moved the body of the passenger to the driver’s seat so as to mislead the police, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the accident happened in June 2017. The police officer was driving inebriated from Chetrosu village of Anenii Noi district towards Chisinau and had two passengers in the car. Trying to overtake a car, he lost control of the vehicle and hit laterally another car. Both of the vehicles were damaged. One of the passengers from the policeman’s car, a service member who worked for the Ministry of Defense, died.
A DNA examination carried out in Romania showed it was the police officer who was driving the car at that moment. This got seven years in jail and was banned from driving for a period of five years and obliged to pay 164,000 lei in respect of pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage to the successor of the injured party and 22,000 lei court costs.
