An Orhei police officer got a 4 years' suspended sentence on charges of negligence while on duty after failing to respond to a domestic violence call, which ended in the death of a person, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General's Office said in a press release that in June 2012 the police officer while on duty at the Orhei Commissariat took a call from a woman who complained that she was being beaten by her husband. However, the officer failed to react and send a unit to the scene. Meanwhile, the beater poured gasoline over his sister-in-law and set her alight. The victim, 20, fell into a coma and died a week later in hospital.
In July 2012, the officer was fired. His recent sentence also bans him from holding Interior posts in the next four years.
A year ago, the perpetrator was also condemned by the Orhei Court. Initially he got 15 years in prison, but after the prosecutors appealed the sentence as too mild, the man got 5 years more.
