Police will no longer be called out in case of minor road accidents

The damage in case of minor road accidents could be determined by amicable ways, without the involvement of the police. A bill to amend a number of legal acts to this effect was approved by the Cabinet. In the case of accidents that result in insignificant damage, the drivers will fill in and sign a form compiled by the supervising authority, IPN reports.

The owners of motor vehicles involved in the accident will be obliged to immediately inform the insurer that issued the civil liability insurance policy or the Green Card insurance certificate about the accident and the intention to use the given procedure.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the police spend a lot of time on the documentation of insignificant road accidents. About 11,000 such accidents are recorded annually. At the place of the accident, the motor vetches cause obstacles to traffic and jams.

An internal audit report by the General Police Inspectorate said the documentation of a road accident at the spot implies costs of 200 lei. As many as 5,221 accidents without victims occurred in Chisinau alone in 2016 and over 1 million lei was spent on their documentation. At national level the costs came to 3.46 million lei.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the amicable settlement method is widely used in the EU. In Romania amicable accident reporting has been applied since July 1, 2009.
