Police unearth $392K of funny money
A man from Puhaceni village, Anenii Noi district, is charged with counterfeiting US currency in large quantities and putting it into circulation. The police have discovered at his residence a sum of $392,000 in 100-dollar bills, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Alexandru Panzari, an Interior Ministry officer, the 3,920 notes were found in a hothouse near the home, beneath a half-a-meter layer of ground. At the man's place the police also found the machinery which he used to forge the money. The man is now in police custody, charged under article 236 of the Criminal Code of Moldova.
The suspect faces a sentence of up to 20 years in jail. The police are now investigating to establish the identity of potential accomplices and the circumstances of the scheme. So far, the law enforcement bodies have failed to determine the exact amount of funny money put into circulation by the counterfeiter.
The Interior Ministry is urging people to be cautious when purchasing foreign currency and advises them to exchange currency only in authorized places.
