The police are torturing the arrested in order to obtain higher rates of crime discovery. However, only one policeman was jailed for this in 2011. The data were presented at a press conference at the General Prosecutor’s Office, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This scourge is haunting the society. In some cases, police officers only want to flex their muscles. Others commit such crimes in order to punish the suspected criminals”, said prosecutor Ion Caracuian, head of PGO’s Anti-torture Division. Most usually, police workers use violence within police stations, but so that they don’t leave any physical evidence on the victims’ bodies. Things are better in jails. “There is violence in jails, but the situation has improved. The problem is the degrading detention conditions”, said Ion Caracuian. In order to fight the torturing of inmates, surveillance cameras have been installed inside police stations, with aid from an international organization. In 2011, courts ruled 9 sentences against 11 people accused of torture, their punishments being suspended. Also, there were 24 sentences against 41 persons for malfeasance in office.
