Police service to become 'modern and more transparent'

The Ministry of the Interior, with the support of the European Union, is launching a program to modernize the Moldovan police service in conformity with the best international and European practices. “The police have to be a reliable shield for the fundamental human rights”, Interior Minister Victor Catan has told a working session on Monday, which was held for the purpose of discussion a road-map for the intended reform, Info-Prim Neo reports. Victor Catan said the reformed police service would respect and protect human rights, would be responsible before the law and be transparent in its activity. “The creation of a modern police service involves a complex approach to the problems faced by every police body, in particular in the countries which seek to align themselves to the requirements of the rule of the law and the democratic principles, including Moldova”. Dejan Mincic, coordinator of the “Support to the Implementation of Moldova-EU Agreements” Project, said the subjects to be discussed at the session concerned modern reforms to combat corruption, trafficking in human beings and drugs. The 5-day working session brings together professionals from the Interior Ministry, the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Border Guards Service, the Anticorruption Center, the State Chancellery, Parliament and specialized NGOs.
