The police in Moldova call on the authorities to toughen up the legislation on the security norms of commercial banks. The call was made after a branch of BC “Moldova Agroindbank” SA situated on Ion Creangă St in Buiucani district of Chisinau was robbed after not all the required security measures were taken to prevent such an offense, IPN reports.

In a press release, the police said individuals on the night of July 6, 2019 stole money, goods, jewels and documents from 84 individual cases from a specially set up room at the given branch. The call to the police was made at 9:15am on July 6, several hours after the commission of the offense. The police established the offenders entered the bank by cutting the window bars and by damaging the lock of the special room. A number of 32 victims who were caused damage totaling 29 431 840 lei have been identified so far.

“The fact that all the required security measures to prevent such cases weren’t taken at the bank points to the absence of concerns on the part of the commercial entity and the institutions responsible for implementing safety standards in the financial-banking system,” said the police.

They intend to request all the component state institutions to urgently together up the legislation on the security systems used by the commercial banks in Moldova so as to avoid the repeat of such cases.

The first examinations showed the crime was planned long ago. Legal action was taken over large-scale theft. A working group was formed of officers of the National Investigation Inspectorate, the Chisinau Police and the Buiucani Police Inspectorate to establish all the circumstances and identify the potential offenders.

The investigation body will inform about the circumstances of the case that can be made public without affecting the ongoing inquiry.

The Ministry of the Interior calls on all the competent state institutions, in particular the Prosecutor General’s Office and the National Bank of Moldova, to support the inquiry by respecting the principle of loyal cooperation between the state institutions.
