Police say car explosion not connected with Igor Turcanu’s political activity

The police ruled out the possibility that the car blast in central Chisinau, as a result of which the chief of candidate Mihai Godea’s electoral staff Igor Turcanu died, is somehow related to his political activity. In a news conference on June 7, General Police Commissariat spokesman Adrian Jovmir said the police are examining the case to determine all the circumstances of the incident, Info-Prim Neo reports. The blast happened at a distance of 3-4 meters from Igor Turcanu, who was going out of the Tennis Federation’s yard at that moment. The car had Russian license numbers. The police contacted their colleagues in Russia to establish the owner of the vehicle. According to Adrian Jovmir, measures are being taken to determine if Igor Turcanu was the target of the explosion or was passing nearby accidentally. It is not yet known for how long the car stayed on Columna St. “The police are examining Mister Igor Turcanu’s work as president of the Tennis Federation of Moldova and his business activity. A connection between the blast and his political activity is excluded,” said Adrian Jovmir. Nicolae Bodrug, head of the Ministry of the Interior’s Criminalistics Division, said a lot of proofs were collected at the scene. “There are a number of versions, including a gas leak, but more time is needed to determine what caused the blast,” he stated. A legal case was opened over this case. The blast occurred near the Chinese Embassy in Chisinau at midday. Igor Turcanu was rushed to the hospital in a serious condition. He died in several hours as a result of cardiac arrest.
