Two employees of the Ciocana Police Inspectorate - a prosecution officer and an investigation officer - were sentenced to five years in jail each for acts of corruption. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in the summer of 2012 the police officers asked €2,100 from a person suspected of committing a rape for not arresting and charging him, IPN reports.
During several days, the police officers contacted by phone the man, telling him to bring the money. At their insistence, the man transmitted a tranche of €1,000 to the policemen.
In July 2014, the court quitted both of the police officers. The prosecutors challenged the decision. Recently, the Chisinau Appeals Court found the two guilty of passive corruption and traffic of influence, sentencing them to five years in prison each and fining them 40,000 and 42,000 lei respectively. They were also banned from holding posts in the bodies of the Ministry of the Interior for a five-year period.
