Two policemen from Leova are suspected of taking €200 bribe. These were caught red-handed by employees of the National Anticorruption Center. The police officers would have asked the money for not taking legal action against a person who allegedly drove under the influence.
The police lieutenant and captain were in the police car when they took the money. They tried to drive away and put up resistance to the anticorruption officers, throwing the money through the car’s window. The money was later found on the sidewalk. Furthermore, the anticorruption officers found on the two US$300 and about 1,000 lei, whose origin these could not explain.
The two officers were placed under arrest for 72 hours. They are now held in the remand center of the Cahul Police Inspectorate and face five to ten years in jail and a fine of 120,000 to 160,000 lei. These could also be banned from holding public posts or performing particular activities for a period of seven to ten years.
