Police officers arrested in smuggling case

Two policemen and other persons were detained in a consumer goods smuggling case. A cargo worth about 3 million lei, which did not have origin documents, was confiscated as a result of perquisitions.

According to a General Prosecutor's Office press release, smuggling was committed with the involvement of a border policeman, which facilitated the introduction of the goods on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The goods were purchased at the "Red Dragon" market in Bucharest, Romania.

The suspects were hiding the goods in the settlements near the border crossing points, then systematically transported them to markets in the capital city in smaller quantities, by using various means of transportation. This process was under the protection of a patrol policeman.

The accused were preventively detained for a 10 day period. If convicted, they risk a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and the confiscation of goods.

The Border Police reacted to the incident by condemning the involvement of its employees in illicit activities. The institution said that it will provide all the necessary support to investigation bodies.

The Directorate of effective inspection of the Border Police General Inspectorate has initiated an internal investigation. The Border Police Leușeni-1 and Leușeni-2 stations have been for some time under the surveillance of the IGPF department responsible for examining disciplinary violations cases.
