Police officer accused of causing accident with death and putting victim at steering wheel

A patrol inspector is accused of committing a road accident that resulted in the death of a passenger a year ago. Being inebriated, he moved the body to the driver’s seat in order to mislead the police, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the accident occurred on June 11, 2017. The policeman drove a BMW car under the influence of alcohol and had two passengers in the car. While speeding on the R2 road from Chetrosu village of Anenii Noi district towards Chisinau, he tried to overtake a car, but lost control of his vehicle and hit laterally another car traveling in the same direction. As a result of the impact, the BMW car overturned and was projected into a tree. One of the passengers died. This was 26 and was a service member.

To escape punishment, the police moved the passenger’s body at the steering wheel. Other persons questioned as witnesses confirmed the victim was driving the car. As the alleged culprit died, the criminal case was dropped.

Later, the case was investigated by the Prosecutor General’s Office, which ordered a DNA test in Romania. The recent conclusions of the Romanian experts confirmed the prosecutors’ suspicion that the car was driven by the policeman when the accident happened.

After over a year of the tragic accident, the patrol inspector was arrested and charged. He faces four to eight years in jail.
