A newborn was found in a vineyard by a woman who was working in the field near Cristești village of Nisporeni district. The child’s mother was found shortly afterward. The 31-year-old woman from Chetroșeni village of Hâncești district told the police that she abandoned the baby for fear she will be unable to raise him, IPN reports.
On June 6, she was working in the field and felt abdominal pain. She wanted to go home, but walked only 30 meters and gave birth. She has four more minor children at home. The eldest child is 11, while the youngest one is six.
The newborn received medical care and was taken to the Nisporeni District Hospital after being breastfed by a woman from the village.
Contacted by IPN for details, press officer of the Nisporeni Police Inspectorate said the woman will be held accountable for leaving in danger, which carries a fine of up to 27,500 lei, 180 to 240 hours of community service or at most two years in jail. The local social assistance service will decide who will take care of the child.
Over a month ago, a child was found dead at a waste dump in Coșnița, Dubăsari. According to press officer of the Dubăsari Police Inspectorate, the mother or the person who threw him to the waste dump hasn’t been yet identified.
In a response to IPN, the Prosecutor General’s Office said that in 2018-2020, the prosecution bodies investigated eight cases of baby killing. The investigations in six of the cases were completed and the cases were sent to court for examination. Three criminal cases were dropped for the reason that no elements of an offense were identified as the baby was born dead. In one case, the investigation was suspended because the person to blame wasn’t identified.
In the period, the court passed a conviction sentence for baby killing. Last April, a 19-year-old woman living in Fălești district was given a one-year suspended sentence. In November 2018, she gave birth in an outhouse and left the child to die.
The women who resort to such gestures invoke poverty and the lack of support from the partner or the family. The mental-legal examination to which mothers who exposed newborns to dangers were subjected showed the women during delivery are confused and do not fully realize what they do, their capacity to estimate the consequences being reduced.
