As many as 114 persons were caught driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics last Saturday night and Sunday night, IPN reports, quoting the patrolling police.

The National Patrolling Inspectorate is carrying out the White Nights operation with a view to making the drivers more responsible given the larger number of serious road accidents caused by inebriated drivers who violate the traffic rules, exceed the speed limit, leave the scene or do not give first aid to the victims.

Eight young people were killed last week when the car in which they travelled crashed into a tree. The driver was under the influence. 

As many as 139 people died in accidents on the national road so far this year.
