PM Recean says Moldova ready to become ‘strategic center’ for Ukraine recovery

Attending the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, Prime Minister Dorin Recean
declared that Moldova, which has the second longest border with Ukraine, is ready to become an “essential strategic center” for the reconstruction of the neighboring state. “We are stronger together and we see this through the support that the international community offers to the reconstruction process of Ukraine”, said the prime minister.

Dorin Recean met in Berlin with heads of state and government, representatives of international organizations and the business community, to reaffirm full support for Ukraine, for democratic values and peace in Europe. “We are developing and expanding our road and rail networks to provide more connectivity between Ukraine and the European Union. We are creating a favorable and accessible environment for the business community and foreign investors”, said the prime minister.

According to him, all this will help to build a European Moldova, develop the economy, and increase the number of well-paying jobs at home. “During the event, I said that now is the best time to invest in Moldova and Ukraine. By investing in Moldova, you are not only supporting us, but also contributing to the broader goal of ensuring peace and stability in the region”, said the prime minister, as quoted in a press release.

Dorin Recean had a meeting with Germany’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock. The officials discussed Moldova’s European integration journey, the support provided by Germany in this process, and ways in which cooperation in the fields of security and economy can be deepened.

Dorin Recean reiterated that Moldova is determined to become a EU member as soon as possible, because this will guarantee our country’s peace, tranquility and prosperity. The authorities’ current agenda of priorities focuses on justice reform, deoligarchization, combating disinformation and ensuring the fairness of the presidential elections and the referendum on European integration.

“Germany is one of our country’s most important partners in the European Union and our dialogue is more important than ever as we are united in our strong support for Ukraine and jointly address the current threats to regional peace and stability”, the Moldovan prime minister said.

He emphasized that Moldova wants to take an active part in the reconstruction process of Ukraine. Currently, our country continues to host more than 130 thousand Ukrainian refugees and there is active collaboration with Ukraine, Romania and the EU to facilitate the transit of goods from and to Ukraine. In this context, the prime minister mentioned that the constant support and German investments in Moldova means, indirectly, support given to Ukrainian citizens who transited Moldova or have found refuge in our country.

For her part, Annalena Baerbock mentioned that, despite the difficult conditions against the backdrop of Russian aggression in Ukraine, Moldova manages to take firm steps to join the great European family. The German official expressed her unconditional support in this matter. Moldovan-German cooperation includes a wide range of projects implemented in areas such as energy efficiency, internal affairs, the rule of law, vocational training, urban and rural development, water supply infrastructure, entrepreneurship development, health care, education, public administration.
