Officials of the health sector during the next two weeks are to present concrete solutions for amending the current normative framework concerning the profit margin on drugs. Prime Minister Pavel Filip requested the competent institutions from the health system to examine and identify mechanism for reducing the profit margin on medicines sold in drugstores, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press service, the application of a differentiated profit margin in the process of forming the prices of drugs is an efficient mechanism that contributes to increasing economic availability, including of expensive medicines. The initiative is aimed at increasing the financial and social protection of the population and the patients’ access to treatment and medical services of a high quality.

The Government said the necessity of implementing a system of regressive profit margins on medicines was also mentioned by the World Health Organization in the study “Physical and economic availability of medicines  in the Republic of Moldova”. According to the WHO, about 70% of the “pocket payments” for health in the Republic of Moldova are made by people for drugs.
