PM asks for explanations from minister of interior over halt in financing for reform

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici requested Minister of the Interior Oleg Balan to explain why the Embassy of Sweden suspended the €2.4 million financing for continuing the reform at the Ministry of the Interior. He asked clarifying the situation and suggesting solutions as swiftly as possible. Contacted by phone by IPN, head of the Government’s press service Olga Cebanu said the request was made following a letter received by the executive.

Asked by IPN to provide details, press officer of the Ministry of the Interior Alina Merlici said the letter sent by the Embassy of Sweden says a decision was taken to postpone this project. “The project was put off owing to the replacement of the Ministry’s administrative personnel given that this project’s objective is to improve the strategic management capacities of the senior managers,” stated Alina Merlici.

She also said that recently the Ministry of the Interior initiated a series of assessments in connection with the police reform, while Romanian experts are to carry out a functional analysis at internal level. After the assessment results are made public, the project will be resumed. Most probably, this will happen in two-three months.

The letter from the Embassy of Sweden was received on May 25.
