PLDM’s candidate for President will be chosen at party’s congress, Vlad Filat

The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) will have its own candidate for the presidential elections who will be selected at the coming party’s congress, the Liberal-Democrat leader, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said in a news conference on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Premier hopes the decision will not affect the relations between the member parties of the Alliance for European Integration. At the same time, the PLDM proposes shortening the election campaigns from two months to one month. “One month is sufficient for all the political players to present their platforms and take part in free and fair debates,” Vlad Filat said, voicing hope that the initiative will be supported by the components of the government coalition. Vlad Filat called on the Moldovan people to take part in the September 5 referendum so that the procedure for electing the head of state is modified and the President is elected by the people, not as a result of understandings reached in the Parliament. According to the Premier, the Alliance will remain united even if the member parties field their own candidate for the President. “Moldova needs a powerful President with a clear view on the country’s future, who will be elected by the people, not created in the lab,” he said. Asked if he was the PLDM’s candidate for the President, Vlad Filat avoided answering, but said the party’s congress will present the complete list of candidates for all the state posts, including of the future MPs. As to the elections, Filat expressed his confidence that the government coalition will obtain better results than in the July 29, 2009 elections. Speaking about the possible date of the early legislative elections, the chairman of the PLDM said a reasonable timeframe means November 14. Asked to comment on the Democrat leader Marian Lupu’s statement that the AEI will be betrayed if the member parties propose their own candidates for the President, Vlad Filat said he does not want the understandings reached in the Parliament to be used in the election campaign. “Those who want to become President must win this right in open and transparent elections so that the winner holds office free from someone’s influence,” Vlad Filat said, reiterating that the government coalition will be more powerful after the autumn elections.
