PLDM wants elections not later than November 14

Prime Minister Vlad Filat told a press briefing on September 6 that the Liberal Democratic Party will insist on the dissolution of Parliament and calling of early elections, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vlad Filat said he received a letter from the secretary of the Council of Europe and the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, addressed to the leaders of the Alliance for European Integration and him personally. The European officials recommend the Moldovan authorities to fulfill the commitments made before the referendum. Speaking about the plebiscite, the Premier stressed that even if the referendum failed, about 90% of the participants voted in favor of amending the Constitution. “An important thing is that we involved the Moldovan people in the decision-making process for the first time. We offered them the possibility of stating their opinions on an issue of national interest,” he said. Asked if the amendment of Article 78 of the Constitution is still necessary, Vlad Filat said the head of state must be elected by popular vote and this thing is be implemented after elections. He considers the electoral reform must continue. The Constitution should not only allow for direct election of the head of state, but also ensure a balance between the branches of power. Vlad Filat stressed that by boycotting the referendum, the Communists Party showed again what goals it pursues in Moldova. “It is not right and normal to keep the people far from decision-making,” he said. According to the preliminary data presented by the Central Election Commission, the voter turnout in the referendum was 29.05%, lower than the required threshold of 33.3%.
