PLDM renounces immunity
The candidates of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova will give up the parliamentary immunity if they accede to power after the November 28 elections. The party also promises to leave the judges without immunity. The action forms part of the PLDM's electoral commitment “Moldova without poverty – Moldova without corruption”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
During an electoral event on October 20, PLDM chairman Vlad Filat said by signing this commitment the Liberal-Democrat MPs pledged to renounce the parliamentary immunity. This will ensure equality before the law, regardless of the position held. The leader of the PLDM considers the governors' immunity is a means of blocking the resolution of corruption-related problems.
The PLDM's staff involved in the election campaign considers that besides the lawmakers, the judges should also be deprived of immunity so as to ensure equity in society. “We propose amending Article 19 of the Law on the Status of Judge so that the judges can be held accountable only by informing the Supreme Council of Magistrates, the President of Moldova and the Head of Parliament,” said Vlad Filat.
The abandonment of parliamentary and judicial immunity is a practice used successfully in France, Spain and Italy.
The PLDM invites all the ruling parties to subscribe to the commitment “Moldova without poverty”.
