The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) disapproves of the decision to place the party’s leader Vlad Filat under arrest for 30 days, at a time when his rights were seriously infringed, and considers that the hurry in which the decisions are taken reveals their political character, while the real culprits for the frauds committed at Banca de Economii (BEM), are trying to find a scapegoat. The PLDM stated its position in a press release, quoted by IPN.
“The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova disproves of the decision to place the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat under arrest, even if the right to defense and a series of procedures were violated. We consider the defense presented enough evidence showing that the procedures for withdrawing the parliamentary immunity and the presumption of innocence were violated. These and other arguments of the defense represent sufficient reasons for releasing Vlad Filat,” says the communique.
“The haste in which all the decisions are taken reveal the political character of this case, while the real culprits to blame for the frauds committed at Banca de Economii are trying to find a scapegoat so as to divert people’s attention away from the illegalities that continue to be committed. The ‘tele-justice’ launched by the politically affiliated media outlets arouses questions as they manipulate the public opinion and distort the facts so as to incriminate Vlad Filat. The PLDM condemns all the discrediting acts to which the party is subject, in particular its leader Vlad Filat,” it is said in the press release.
The PLDM assures that despite all the attacks, the PLDM remains constant and firm in its approaches aimed at building a state of law, correct justice and a European future for Moldova, being most interested in discovering the truth about the stealing committed in the financial-banking sector.
On October 15, Parliament withdrew the immunity of Liberal-Democratic MP Vlad Filat by the votes of 79 MPs of 101, following a request made by the prosecutor general. The Liberal-Democratic heavyweight is accused of passive corruption and traffic of influence. After the Parliament hearing, Vlad Filat was escorted to the National Anticorruption Center, where he was placed under arrest for 72 hours. The PLDM and Filat’s lawyers assert this is a political case.
