The Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) is for holding local general elections in June, the party’s chairman Vlad Filat said Thursday. The date of elections will be set in the April 3 sitting of Parliament, IPN reports.
Vlad Filat stated that there are three options: to hold the local elections the next Sunday after the term in office of the local elected officials expires; to hold the elections in autumn by making an amendment to the Electoral Code, and to do the territorial-administrative reform, if there is political will.
According to the leader of the PLDM, this reform is very necessary as there are 98 mayor’s offices in settlements with a population of under 1,000 and about 200 mayor’s offices in settlements with a population of under 1,500. The local administration in these settlements does not work normally and causes unjustified costs.
Vlad Filat noted it’s not true that the PLDM wants the elections to be postponed because it fears something as the Lib-Dems are ready to anytime enter the election campaign.
Earlier, the Liberal-Democratic leader said the local elections should be put off until next year so that the territorial-administrative reform could be done meanwhile.
The local general elections may take place on June 7 or on June 14. The last local elections took place on June 5, 2011.
