First Deputy Speaker Vlad Plahotniuc said he is decided to change from inside the current political system that protects itself. He made related statements in a meeting with Steven Rader, program director at the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Moldova, which centered on the reformation of the political class, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from Parliament. Vlad Plahotniuc expressed his determination to make a change to improve the quality of the political system of Moldova, while IRI may support such approaches as this is one of its objectives in our country. “I proposed a broader reform of the political class, including to institute the uninominal voting system for electing the MPs. In the U.S., the whole election system is based on the performance of the politician and I want to promote such a system in Moldova,” said Vlad Plahotniuc. He also said that his proposal concerning the uninominal voting system was met with fear by the political class, but he is determined to change from inside the current system that protects itself. “When such a system is instituted, the results achieved or not achieved by the politicians will be more visible. This aspect worries some politicians, but I’m optimistic that the Election Code will be changed in this respect,” he stated. Specifying that one of the objectives of IRI in Moldova is to promote reforms designed to improve the efficiency and democratic character of the political parties, Steven Rader confirmed that the Institute is concerned with the modernization of the political system. “I approve of and agree with many of your principles as regards the political reform, Mister Plahotniuc. A successful party is a party that works well at local level, encourages the involvement of the political leaders and attracts values to its subdivisions,” he said. The IRI is a non-profit organization founded in the U.S. in 1983. In Moldova, it aims to strengthen the democratic political activities.
