Placement center for children in difficulty replaces boarding school in Cahul
Thirty children from the former Cahul boarding school benefit now from the services of the placement center for children who remained without parental care “Impreuna” (“Together”). The project to reorganize the boarding school forms part of the “You Build the Future” campaign conducted by EveryChild Moldova. Over 310,000 lei was collected as part of the campaign for the project, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The partners of the project were the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, the Cahul local public administration and Andreas A David Foundation.
According to the placement center's director Emilia Mocanu, 268 children wee in the boarding school five years ago. Now, there are only 75 children. Thirty of them were accommodated in the six new houselets of the placement centers. The others remained in the old building called “Friendship”. Nine out of those accommodated in the new houselets go home every evening.
The new houselets are like small apartments with two bedrooms, restroom, kitchen and bathroom. Some of them have computer, TV set, washing machine, fridge, electric teapot, microwave oven. Orphans or children who remained temporarily without parental care aged between 7 and 17 live there.
“These children deserve better living conditions. They are not guilty that they are in such a situation. The children here participate in all the activities that should be carried out in the family. They will also be able to acquire professional skills that they could use in the future,” Cahul district head Gheorghe Vasilache said at the inaugural ceremony.
“In this center, we made new friends. We are grateful to those who were near us and helped us have a home. We are free here. We enjoy all the modern conveniences and live like in a family,” said Corina Captaciuc, who benefits from the services of the center. Another child, Dan Carlan, said that since he started to attend the center he has learned better at school. “We do not have all the conveniences at home. Here I can do my homework together with my mates and I feel better,” said beneficiary Constantin Macari.
“There should be more such projects that provide new services for the children. The children are very glad that they have where to live and managed to overcome the difficulties,”said Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Valentina Buliga.
The center's director Emilia Mocanu voiced hope that the new accommodation and recreational conditions will be useful to the children. “The children need love, care and a good word,” she said.
“You Build the Future” campaign is the first of the kind conduced by EveryChild Moldova. It aims to strength the communities' capacities to solve major social problems. We must support these children and help them be successful in life. The people should change their attitude towards these children,” said Stela Grigoras, director of EveryChild Moldova.
Since September 2008, EveryChild in partnership with the Cahul General Division of Education and Youth and the Social Assistance Division have integrated all the children from the boarding school
into community schools and reintegrated 50% of the children into the biological or extended families.
The construction of the center started in the summer of 2007, when 156 children lived in the boarding school. The goal was to transform the institution into a community social services center providing an atmosphere close to the family and the community.
