The Liberal Party (PL) will take part in the formation of a parliamentary coalition together with MPs from other parties who support the European course of Moldova, the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU and the reformation of a number of sectors, the party’s chairman Mihai Ghimpu said after the meeting of the PL’s National Council held on January 10, IPN reports.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mihai Ghimpu said he got the impression that the Liberal Democratic Party captured the post of Prime Minister and wants to hold it for life. He reminded that the Constitutional Court ruled that if there is no majority in Parliament to field a candidate for premiership, the candidate is nominated by the head of state and if this candidate is rejected by the legislature, there will be early elections. “We, the Liberals, have to answer for what others committed, including robberies, acts of corruption and smuggling, and to take decisions that are to our detriment,” said the Liberals’ leader.

He noted that given the current situation in the country, the PL’s National Council decided that the party will take part in the formation of a parliamentary collation with MPs who unconditionally support Moldova’s European course. Thus, the Liberals are ready to discuss the formation of an alliance. There were rumored such Democratic candidates for Prime Minister as Marian Lupu, Andrian Candu and Vlad Plahotniuc, but a decision is yet to be taken.

As to the 14 MPs who left the Party of Communists and expressed their readiness to contribute to forming a parliamentary alliance, Mihai Ghimpu said not the Liberals will vote for what the former Communists suggest, but the latter will come to support the reforms and the European course. “Why should we reject someone who lends a hand?” he asked.

A new candidate for premiership is to be proposed the coming days. Both the Democratic Party and the Liberal Democratic Party claim the post of Prime Minister.
