PL wants to get rid of Soviet passports

Liberal Party MPs proposed that Moldovan citizens that hold Soviet passports should be obliged to get new IDs until July 1, 2013, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a PL press release, the initiative’s authors Valeriu Munteanu and Ion Hadarca explain that the proposal will repair a legal gap maintained during previous governments and will bring back to normality the administrative process of keeping record of the population, in order to facilitate European integration. “This anachronistic situation, when 8% of the country’s population still use ID papers issued by an inexistent/defunct state 20 years after the country proclaimed its independence requires urgent regulation”, reads the informative note of the draft law. Changing Soviet passports with new IDs will be free of charge, considering the free issuing of initial documentation and even their issuing at home for people who can’t walk. According to data of the Minister of Technology of Information and Communications, over 260,000 citizens of Moldova still use 1974-type Soviet passports.
